Projections and Inner Transformation

Why do some people continue to see us through an older version of ourselves? An article about projectionsshadow workindividuation and inner transformation.

When the External Gaze Does Not Always Follow Our Inner Transformation

Sometimes, someone speaks about us through an image that no longer truly corresponds to who we are.

A perception based on a specific moment, a meeting, a posture we embodied at a given time.

And yet, in the meantime, something has shifted.

On a path of personal or spiritual evolution, it is common to feel that our inner world is changing faster than the image others still hold of us.

I believe many people on a path experience this at some point.

The feeling of being perceived through an older version of themselves, while inwardly, a transformation is already unfolding.

It is a sometimes disorienting gap, but a deeply human one.

Projections: when the other person also speaks about themselves

In analytical psychology, especially in the work of Carl Gustav Jung, projection refers to the act of attributing to another person elements that belong to us, often unconsciously.

In other words, when someone describes us, they are never speaking only about us.

They are also speaking through:

  • their own lens of perception,
  • their personal experiences,
  • their values,
  • their sensitive areas.

For example, someone who is more reserved may be perceived as withdrawn by someone who values direct expression.

A gentle person may be interpreted as fragile by someone who associates strength with visible assertion.

These readings are not necessarily false, but they are partial.

They reflect the meeting between two inner worlds.

🌑 The Shadow: what we learn to look at within ourselves

In Jungian work, the shadow refers to the parts of ourselves that we have not yet fully integrated into consciousness.

Shadow work consists of recognising certain aspects of ourselves:

  • our imbalances,
  • our automatic reactions,
  • our areas of discomfort,
  • our contradictions.

On a path of evolution, it is common to realise, for example, that we have not always been fully listening, or that we have had difficulty positioning ourselves clearly.

These realisations can lead to important adjustments.

But these phases of adjustment do not define an identity.

They are part of a transformation.

⚖️ Moving from one extreme to another: a necessary rebalancing

Sensitive or highly sensitive people often move from one pole to another throughout their lives.

Someone who realises they have taken up too much space may, at first, move towards the opposite extreme:

  • listening a lot,
  • stepping back,
  • observing more.

This movement is not a regression.

It is a learning phase.

We explore a new space, sometimes in a more pronounced way, before finding a more aligned point of balance.

This process can also be understood as an attempt to recover a form of inner coherence, more aligned with what we are discovering about ourselves.

🌿 Solitude and integration: one stage of the process

These periods of rebalancing are often accompanied by a need for solitude.

Not as imposed isolation, but as a space of integration.

When many elements are shifting inwardly, it becomes necessary to slow down, feel, and make sense of what is happening.

In these moments, connection with others may feel more intense, sometimes even destabilising. Sensitive or highly sensitive people may experience these gaps with greater intensity, especially when they are going through important phases of inner transformation.

Temporarily withdrawing allows what is transforming to consolidate.

✨ Individuation: becoming yourself beyond images

In Carl Gustav Jung’s work, the process of individuation refers to the movement through which a person gradually becomes themselves, by integrating their different dimensions, both conscious and unconscious.

This process is not linear.

It involves:

  • realisations,
  • questioning,
  • successive adjustments,
  • phases of imbalance.

From this perspective, it is natural that the image others have of us does not always follow our inner evolution.

Individuation is an intimate path, often invisible from the outside.

💛 Gentleness, vulnerability and misunderstandings

Certain qualities, such as gentleness, listening or vulnerability, are still frequently associated with a form of weakness.

Yet, in a process of transformation, they may point to something very different:

  • the ability to feel,
  • emotional openness,
  • presence with oneself and with others.

Vulnerability, in particular, can be understood as a resource.

It allows us to put words to what is happening inwardly, and to create connection in a more authentic way.

But these states can be misinterpreted by external gazes that do not share the same reference points.

The gap as a sign of evolution

When someone reflects back an image that no longer corresponds to who we are, it can feel reductive. These experiences are common in deep personal growth journeys.

But this gap can also be read differently.

It may indicate:

  • that movement has happened,
  • that a path has been travelled,
  • that an older version of the self is being outgrown.

In other words, what the other person perceives sometimes already belongs to the past.

🌙 Moving forward without freezing yourself

What we go through does not define us entirely.

What others perceive does not imprison us.

And what we have been does not limit what we are becoming.

Identity is not a fixed image.

It is built, deconstructed and reorganised.

It evolves through experiences, realisations and transformations.

In this context, it becomes possible to welcome the projections of others without reducing ourselves to them.

Not by trying to correct every perception, but by staying anchored in our own movement.

This inner evolution can also lead to a deeper relationship with your intuition and your Higher Self.

Moving through these phases with support

These periods of transformation can be deep, sometimes destabilising, and may require a space of support.

In an individual session, I offer a framework to move through these passages with more clarity and gentleness.

Through the Akashic Records or activations in Light Language and Light Codes, the work can help to:

  • bring light to your natural gifts and talents,
  • confirm what is already beginning to open within you,
  • soothe doubts and areas of uncertainty,
  • help you feel more aligned with your own path.

These sessions support your process, not by transforming you from the outside, but by accompanying what is already moving within you.

They allow these passages to become more fluid, more conscious, and often gentler to experience. ✨
